I am six days away from the first anniversary of Amelie and Adaline's brief life. I've chosen to celebrate them by releasing one picture a day leading up to Saturday that tells the story of September 21, 2012 from my perspective.
I Held Your Hands
I held your hands because that was all I could do.
The operating table was a prison. While the doctors finished caring for me, I was strapped down. I couldn't hold you.
So your dad held you as near to me as he could.
And I held your hands.
I told you I loved you.
I cried while you slept, safe from the pain that your own bodies would have caused you.
You never opened your eyes and looked at me. I never heard the sound of your voices. For fifty-two minutes I worried that even as I held your hands, you had slipped away from me.
And then, at 10:35 am, you did.
